From whichever concern one approaches the issue, the gap between poor and rich, war and peace or the (ecologic) well-being of our planet, one always ends up at the dominant influence of the USA in our society. Let us be clear: our world is not what it seems. Our brave free world advocates nice principles, but what does reality show? America Watchers wants to offer information that unravels the part the USA is playing in everyday life and global politics.
The most important objectives of our organisation are to give form to a real international solidarity. We want to reach fair international treaties and agreements, which are not solely inspired by profit and power politics. Just the simple implementation of existing treaties and resolutions can be an important step forward.
Without the cooperation of one of the most important players on the international scene, the USA, many of these treaties turn out to be paper tigers. America Watchers wants to collect and spread objective and critical information on all aspects of the US policy that may have an impact on the rest of the world. We consider all aspects of life: ecology, culture, human rights, globalisation, international agreements.
We aim at a broad sensitisation about the part ‘big brother' is playing in our world. The US determine how and whether small farmers in the Andes will survive, whether the Kurds and Palestinians may keep the hope, whether environmental regulations will be adhered to, or whether US-style violence will spread worldwide, or whether future generations will only belong with a portable and a can of coca-cola in their hands.
In recent history the US call for international solidarity against terrorism made us raise our brows. The cowboys who blew up international solidarity against environmental terrorism, the cowboys who for many years have put aside UN resolutions against Israel, the cowboys who were solely concerned with their own economic power policy, the cowboys who do not want to ratify international weapon treaties (like the one banning land mines) are now asking for international solidarity themselves!
But it is not just direct violence that touches people, but also the consequences of the ever widening gap between rich and poor, the raising number of cancer and asthma incidence, the shameless push for food produced or saturated with hormone or gmo (genetically manipulated organisms) which we consider as forms of violence or suffering that can be avoided.
Let us be honest. We can not but be critical of Bush jr. We will of course not try to get him "dead or alive" but we think that he is a threat to democracy. We do not only consider the number of votes which elected him, we also consider Bush as a puppet of the oil industry, which is pulling the puppet's strings to go against the Kyoto agreement, and the weapons lobby among others.
America Watchers wants to critically assess the American influence worldwide and in our own society. After all we ourselves decide whether or not to step into the fastfood and cola consumption and we have ourselves to turn off or contest the Rambo movies and Big Brother series. Being Europeans we can look at history, call our leaders to follow a daring road in the interest of world peace and general well-being rather than running after the US to pick a few grains. Keeping this in mind we promote daring yet nonviolent actions.
What else you need to know about America Watchers: We are pluralistic and not party-linked, non-violent and against racism, and we are very solidary with the least favoured of the world. We are very concerned about the world and the well-being of young people, here and anywhere.
